200 million native Portuguese speakers

In comparison with its larger Iberian sister Spanish, Portuguese is often neglected. From a European perspective, Portugal — with its small population of some 10 million — is often only regarded as a holiday destination. This does little justice to a former world power and its national language, however. As a maritime power, Portugal spread its language far and wide; today Portuguese has over 200 million native speakers. All told more than a quarter of a billion people speak Portuguese as their native or second language, making Portuguese the sixth-most common native language worldwide. Portuguese is also the official language of ten countries including Brazil, which is not only South America's largest and most densely populated country, but also boasts one of the ten largest economies on earth.
